Connectivity & Setup

Q: How do I set up the Hub for the first time?
A: Setting up the Hub is simple. Plug it into power, open the BARN-IQ™ app, and follow the on screen steps to connect it to your Wi-Fi. Once the Hub is online, you can add sensors with just a tap. Our Little Giant® Smart Hub quick start guide, which is included in every Little Giant® Smart Hub package, explains the steps for setting up your Hub for the first time through ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both! If you do not have a quick start guide, please visit our website, www.miller-mfg.com to find an online version of the full user guide.
Q: Does the Hub require Wi-Fi, or can it work offline?
A: The Little Giant® Smart Hub needs Wi-Fi to send alerts to your phone. If Wi-Fi goes down, the sensors will continue collecting data, and the app will update once the connection is restored. The Little Giant® Smart Hub can also run off of only ethernet, if such a connection is available in the absence of Wi-Fi.
Q: What happens if my Wi-Fi goes offline? Will the sensors still collect data?
A: Yes. The sensors continue monitoring conditions even if Wi-Fi is temporarily unavailable. Alerts and updates will resume as soon as the Little Giant® Smart Hub reconnects.
Q: How far away from the Hub can I place the sensors?
A: The sensors have an open-air range of up to ¼ mile. This means that in an open area the product signal could extend up to ¼ mile, but property layout could impact this number. Thick walls or metal structures may shorten signal range. If needed, you can always add additional Little Giant® Smart Hubs in other locations, allowing for easier sensor access to a closer signal.
Q: Do trees, metal barns, or long distances affect the signal range?
A: Yes, large metal buildings, dense walls, and long distances can reduce signal strength. If needed, you can reposition the Little Giant® Smart Hub or add additional Little Giant® Smart Hubs for extended coverage.
Q: Can the Hub be used outdoors or in unheated buildings?
A: The Hub is designed for indoor use or protected areas like enclosed barns or workshops. The Little Giant® Sensors themselves are built to handle tougher environments. Some Little Giant® sensors are IP rated and can be used outdoors.
Q: What is the maximum number of devices one hub can connect to?
A: There is no specific limit on the number of devices you can add to one hub. In tests, a single hub was capable of supporting 180 devices without issues. It is recommended customers consider adding another hub if they have between 100 and 200 devices.

Power & Durability

Q: How long do the sensor batteries last?
A: Most sensors run for several months to over a year on a single battery, depending on usage and environmental conditions. The app will notify you when battery is running low.
Q: Are the sensors weatherproof or waterproof?
A: Yes. Our sensors are built for indoor and outdoor environments and can handle rain, dust, and everyday outdoor conditions. Specific ratings vary by sensor type.
Q: Can the sensors withstand dust, mud, or extreme temperatures?
A: Absolutely. They’re designed for barns, sheds, and outdoor use, with rugged housings that tolerate dirt, moisture, and temperature swings. Specific ratings vary by sensor type.
Q: Do I need to protect the sensors from livestock or equipment?
A: Sensors should be mounted out of reach of animals and away from areas where equipment may hit them. Each sensor includes mounting options to help you place it safely.

App & Alerts

Q: How do I receive alerts on my phone?
A: Once your Little Giant® Smart Hub and sensors are connected, the BARN-IQ™ app can be enabled to send instant push notifications whenever a sensor detects activity or a condition you’ve set. You receive the alerts on your phone via push notification., If you are not receiving alerts make sure that push notifications are enabled in your device settings for the BARN-IQ™ app.
Q: Can I customize alert types (text, push notification, sound)?
A: Yes. You can choose how you want to be notified and adjust alert settings for each individual sensor. You can also customize the content of each alert , for example if you have two door sensors you can set alert as “Door 1 Open” and the other as “Door 2 Open” allowing you to differentiate the two doors.
Q: Can multiple people (family members, ranch hands) receive alerts?
A: Yes. You can share access through the app so others on your team can view sensor data and receive alerts.
Q: Does the app work without cell service?
A: You’ll need either Wi-Fi or cellular data to receive alerts to your mobile phone. If you’re offline, alerts will appear once your phone reconnects.
Q: Can I check sensor history, like past temperatures or door open events?
A: Yes. The app stores recent activity so you can review trends, check past readings, and see when events occurred. Most sensor data is saved from the past 30 days. Longer history can be viewed if it is exported and saved to your mobile device.

Use Cases & Practical Questions

Q: Can I use these sensors in barns, sheds, greenhouses, or pastures?
A: Yes. They’re designed specifically for agricultural environments and work well in a wide range of structures and outdoor areas. Specific outdoor ratings vary by sensor type.
Q: Will the door sensor work on large sliding barn doors or pasture gates?
A: Yes. The door sensor works on most door and gate types, including sliding barn doors and metal pasture gates, as long as the contact points are mounted within ¾” from each other when the gate/door is closed.
Q: Can the temperature sensor monitor hay storage, animal pens, or equipment sheds?
A: Definitely. It’s ideal for monitoring temperature-sensitive areas like hay lofts, brooders, tack rooms, and equipment storage. It can also be used in incubators and beehives!
Q: Can I use the system to track water tank levels or feed bin levels?
A: Some sensors may be used creatively for these purposes, depending on your setup.
Q: Are the sensors safe to use around animals?
A: Yes. The sensors are sealed, low power devices that are safe around livestock and pets when installed properly.

Installation & Compatibility

Q: How do I mount or install each type of sensor?
A: Each sensor includes simple mounting hardware such as adhesive pads and/or screws. The app also provides step by step installation guidance.
Q: Do I need tools to install the sensors?
A: This depends on how you would like to install your sensors. Most sensors can be installed without tools using the included adhesive pads. Screws are provided if you prefer a more permanent installation, which may require other tools such as a screwdriver or hammer.
Q: Are the sensors compatible with other smart home systems?
A: Yes! These sensors have been tested with Alexa and Google home systems.
Q: Can I add more sensors later if my operation grows?
A: Yes. You can add Little Giant® sensors at any time, and they will automatically appear in your app once paired. You can assign sensors names and rooms to easily tell them apart and if ¼ mile of open-air range is not enough you can add additional Little Giant® Smart Hubs to extend your sensor reach even further.

Troubleshooting

Q: What should I do if a sensor stops reporting?
A: Check the battery, make sure the sensor is within range of the Little Giant® Smart Hub, and confirm your Wi-Fi is working. The app includes troubleshooting tips for each sensor type.
Q: How do I reset a sensor or the Hub?
A: You can reset devices using the small set button on each unit. The user guide provides instructions for your specific model.
Q: Why am I not receiving alerts on my phone?
A: Make sure notifications are enabled in both the app and your phone’s settings. Also check that the Little Giant® Smart Hub is online and your Wi-Fi is functioning. Each sensor has a “Diagnosis of Device Alarm”, this can be found by selecting the required sensor then in the top right corner selecting the ? then selecting “Diagnosis of Device Alarm” you can use this to receive test alerts from this sensor via push notification and email.
