A guide for aspiring animal exhibitors

If you love animals and want to share your passion with others, you might be interested in showing your animals at the fair. Showing animals at the fair can be a fun and rewarding experience but requires some preparation and planning.

What Kinds of Animals Can You Show at the Fair?

There are many different kinds of animals that you can show at the fair, depending on the rules and regulations of your local fair. Some of the most common categories of animals that you can show are:

  • Livestock: These are animals that are raised for food, fiber, or work, such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, llamas, alpacas, and rabbits. Livestock shows usually involve judging the animals based on their breed standards, health, conformation, and performance.

  • Poultry: These are birds that are raised for eggs, meat, or feathers, such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and quail. Poultry shows usually involve judging the birds based on their breed standards, health, plumage, and quality.

  • Dogs: These are domesticated animals that are kept as pets or working animals, such as herding dogs, hunting dogs, service dogs, and companion dogs. Dog shows usually involve judging the dogs based on their breed standards, health, temperament, and obedience.

  • Cats: These are domesticated animals that are kept as pets or working animals, such as barn cats, show cats, and therapy cats. Cat shows usually involve judging the cats based on their breed standards, health, personality, and grooming.

  • Small animals: These are animals that are kept as pets or hobby animals, such as hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, rats, gerbils, hedgehogs, and chinchillas. Small animal shows usually involve judging the animals based on their health, appearance, and behavior.

Depending on your fair, you might also be able to show other kinds of animals, such as reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, or exotic animals. However, you should always check with your fair organizers before bringing any animals that are not listed in the official categories. You should also make sure that your animals are healthy, vaccinated, and have the proper permits and paperwork to be shown at the fair.
